Surrounded by the sea, the lemon groves of the Conca d’Oro and the headland of Monte Pellegrino, Palermo is not only the administrative centre of the indipendent Region set up in 1947, but is today Sicily’s only true city- the centre of the island’s economic, political and cultural life.
The city takes its name from the port ( Palermo is derived from ” Panormus”, meaning ” a large port”, an expression of Greek etymology which conquered the island).
Two months ego i visited Palermo with two friends, for first time.
This is an amazing city, full of colors.
The most important monuments to visit in Palermo are:
PALAZZO DEI NORMANNI
During the 9th century the Arabs replaced these with a powerful fortress, also known as the Emirates’ Palace, which the Normans later transformed into a symptuous residence, richly decorated by skilful Arab and Byzantine craftsmen.
THE PALATINE CHAPEL
An amazing bulding with glittering and shining mosaics.
Work on building the chapel, intended for the private use of the ruling family, began in 1130 when Roger II was crowned king of Italy, and was completed some thirteen years later as can be seen from the date 1143 given in a inscription in the dome as the year of its consecration.
THE CATHEDRAL OF PALERMO
One of the most amazing monuments of ever.
It is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, is echoed in its centuries-long architectural and artistic development.
Founded in 1184 by archbishop Gualtiero Offamilio
Three splendid apses formed part of the plan of the early basilica and today represent one of the few remaining original elements. Standing between two fine, slender turrets, the apses are typically Norman in style and decoration, with intertwining arches, delicaate inlay work, suspended arches, curved double lintels and characteristic rounded crenellations, all enhanced by delicate and subtle colouring.
TEATRO MASSIMO
One of the largest and most prestigious theatres in Europe, the Teatro Massimo is most renowned for its opera performances. Design By Giovan Battista Basile, work was completed by his son Ernesto in 1897.
INTERNATIONAL PUPPET MUSEUM
Which represents fulling the spirit of Sicily.
In via Butera, where the collection contains not only the traditional puppets of Palermo and Trapani, and the classic Neapolitan marionettes, but also items from all over the world as weel as elaborate scenery.
THE PORT OF PALERMO
